Oberammergau
In 1633, during the Thirty Year’s War, the small mountain village of Oberammergau
was hit by the black plague. To parry the epidemic, the surviving inhabitants took a
vow to stage performances telling the last week in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. At
first the performances were held on the village cemetery. Meanwhile the
internationally famous Oberammergau Passion Play is put on stage in a theater
every 10th year.
In the village, colorful fresco paintings decorate many houses. Traditional
Oberammergau crafts such as wood carvings are offered in the souvenir shops.
