Nuremberg
Nuremberg is a town with two totally divergent historic ages. In the medieval Old Town you find an Imperial Fortress, ancient St. Mary’s Cathedral, city fortifications and narrow streets lined by half-timbered frame work houses. In one of these the Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer lived till his death in 1528. Local Franconian wine, tasty Nuremberg sausages and other delicacies of the region are to be had in the quaint restaurants of the Old Town. Nuremberg ginger bread is exported world-wide.

Nuremberg has to carry the burden of having been the “ideological Capital” of National Socialism from 1933 to 1945. On the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds a Documentation Center opened in 2001. Besides the permanent exhibition “Fascination and Terror” seminars are held there on the history of the “Third Reich”.

Of interest are especially 3 places:
- Documentation Center
- Building of the Nuremberg Trials after World War II
- “March Field”, planned for 250.000 spectators of parades

By geographically aligning his “Great Street” with the Imperial Castle in the Old Town, the Nazi architect Albrecht Speer tried to create a symbolic link between Nuremberg in times of the “Third Reich” and Nuremberg as a historic free town of trade, art and culture in the times of the imperial “First Empire”.
