Augsburg
Originally a Roman settlement and one of the oldest towns in Germany, the
ancient “Free Imperial City”, Augsburg today welcomes visitors who marvel at
the grand architecture and bronze sculptures and who are amazed at the
“Fuggerei”. This compound of 53 tiny historic houses dates back some 500
years ago when Jakob Fugger the Rich from Augsburg not only served as
banker to the Habsburg emperors but also sponsored the arts and founded the
charitable institution for Augsburg citizens in need. Ever since then this
foundation is alive and one of the touristic highlights as a kind of open air
museum.
